Sony Bill Tops Tattersalls Online June Sale at 64,000 Guineas

A remarkably diverse buying bench saw a busy afternoon’s trade in today’s Tattersalls Online June Sale with talented hurdler SONY BILL leading proceedings when selling for 64,000 to Lodgedown Stables.

Over 340 bidders from 22 countries joined the Tattersalls Online June Sale which realised a turnover of 580,500 guineas for 53 lots sold at an average price of 11,213 guineas.

The day’s top lot was the promising five-year-old SONY BILL who was consigned by Willie Mullins’ Closutton Stables. The son of BATTLE OF MARENGO previously placed third in the Grade 2 Leopardstown Juvenile Hurdle and carried a current IHRB hurdle rating of 136. Leading purchasers, Lodgedown Stables, were also responsible for securing Listed winner ZILLOW from the same consignment for 24,000 guineas. The Closutton Stables draft saw 100 per cent clearance for four lots offered and turnover of 96,800 guineas.

Also proving popular amongst bidders was progressive stayer ANNIVERSARY who realised 56,000 guineas when purchased by The Brushmakers. Consigned by Ralph Beckett’s Kimpton Down Stables, the four-year-old son of SEA THE MOON was a Newmarket maiden winner as a juvenile and had shown consistent form in recent handicaps over staying distances on the turf.

The highly anticipated partial dispersal from Écurie de Cachene, breeders of recent Group 1 winner OPERA BALLO, did not disappoint with all three lots selling for an aggregate of 100,000 guineas. Leading the way was GALILEO mare CRUISE CONTROL, who was offered in foal to HENRI MATISSE with a colt foal at foot by PALACE PIER and fetched 54,000 guineas to the winning bid of MBL. Meanwhile QUEENSFERRY, sold in foal to SPACE BLUES, realised 29,000 guineas to Mohammed Hamad Khalifa Al Attiyah whilst WHATABIRD, offered in foal to BLACKBEARD and with a filly foal at foot by EREVANN, was purchased by Kendall Equine for 17,000 guineas.

Newtown Stud’s Cathy Grassick commented following the sale:

“We were very happy with the results of the draft we offered from Newtown Stud on Tattersalls Online in the June sale. This part of the dispersal for Écurie de Cachene was handled brilliantly by Katherine Sheridan & her team. They offered great support and promotion for the draft and we had great interest both from abroad and with actual farm inspections. It is great to see the online format grow from strength to strength and I would happily recommend Tattersalls Online to other vendors. I would like to also thank Écurie de Cachene for allowing us to present this part of the dispersal.”

The sale also featured the fourth edition of the Tattersalls Online Breeze Up Session which attracted international attention with lots sold to Britain, Italy, Norway, Sweden and the Gulf region. The session was topped by Kelly Keniry’s eye-catching filly by COTAI GLORY out of FRANKEL mare STRAIGHT TALKING who realised 20,000 guineas to EMcC Racing and Alison Jones. In total 12 breeze up lots sold from 15 lots offered for a turnover of 102,200 guineas.
